About The Institute
The Jaw-Brain Institute for Neuromuscular Research Inc. explores the relationship between the dentofacial system, the brain, the body through the lens of neuromuscular function.
Our work focuses on the jaw as an active sensorimotor system - one that continuously responds to occlusion, muscle activity, movement, and emotional stress.
A central area of our interest is the jaw-brain connection: how changes within the masticatory system are communicated through neuromuscular and proprioceptive pathways, how stress is reflected in jaw and muscle activity, and how these responses may relate to broader patterns of muscular tension and functional throughout the body.
Interdisciplinary collaboration is the core of the Institute's mission. We believe that understanding the jaw-brain-body relationship requires perspective beyond any single medical or scientific discipline. The Institute aims to bring together clinicians, researchers, and specialists from orthodontic dentistry, neuroscience, psychology, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, aging research, and related fields.
By bringing different areas of expertise into conversation, we aim to examine the same biological relationships from multiple perspectives, identify connections that may overlooked within isolated specialties, and develop new questions for collaborative research.
Our goal is not simply to study the jaw, but to use it as a point of connection between disciplines - creating a broader framework for understanding how oral and neuromuscular function interact with stress, movement, adaptation, and aging throughout the human body.
